Review of the Novel 

This is the second book of Paulo Coelho that I am reading, after The Alchamist. I read this book quite a few years ago for the first time and i was really impressed by it, it is a short book hence for a person like me, who is just starting the habit of reading, it was a good choise. Veronica Decides to Die follows the the story of a 24 year old woman's attempted suicide and her life in an asylum. As the title suggest Veronica decides to end her life because of some personal reasons and the story is of her suicide attempts and the events that it follows. She had a normal life, she had everything she could wish for, she was young and pretty, attactive boyfriends, a steady job and a lovin family. Yet Veronica is unhappy and decides to overdose herself to die, only to wake up in a near by hospital and to realise the truth that although she is alive her heart is very badly damaged and she has only a few days left. 

The story is not very complicated, however it is rich with philosophical insights which questions the very existence of Veronica as a person. We could say Veronica was in a state of existential crisis and her near death experience brings insightful ideas about life. Character development of Veronica is the important element of the novel. She realises that every moment in our lives is special and prestigious. Language is not heavy still has a poetic beauty in it.

If you are looking for the same kind of effect that Alchemist has created in you, this book is going to disappoint you. It is nothing like Alchemist, we could say this book is more realistic and mundane although the in real life most us are not even aware of our existence. Altogether it is nice book, short, simple yet filled with ideas that makes us think and makes us grateful for the life we have.
